// irssi.
irssi is an IRC client, initially made for UNIX terminals but compatible with Cygwin. It supports Perl scripting and themes, so it is highly customizable.
// read this first.
Before using this software, you are highly advised to read the startup manual and the special auto-connect how-to for information on how to work with this software, like showing multiple channels at once and other nifty features. ;-)
Remember that this website only covers irssi for Win32. Recent irssi builds for other platforms are available on or via the official irssi site.
// motivation.
There are some official Win32 irssi ports around the internet, but all of those have two major disadvantages: They are shipped as an NSIS package, but I prefer the "unzip and run" way (unpacking NSIS installers is quite hard for beginners), and they are very seldomly updated; it regularly takes some months to get a new irssi release as a Win32 package. So I decided to create my own irssi for Windows, without an installer; unpack it and run it, without any extra effort.
// package details.
This package contains the latest irssi release, compiled on Cygwin with a recent version of the Perl libraries (currently 5.10, the official Win32 port uses 5.8). It is packed with the latest 7-zip version.
To run this version of irssi, simply unpack it anywhere and run the appropriate batch script.
- irssi.cmd / irssi.bat:
runs irssi in a PuTTY terminal window. Recommended.
- irssi-cmd.cmd / irssi-cmd.bat:
runs irssi in a Command Prompt window. Not really recommended.
Remark: Although this package is thoroughly tested on Vista, it may happen that it doesn't work on other platforms. If you encounter such problems and/or know how to avoid them, feel free to send me an e-mail. Thank you in advance.
IMPORTANT:
This package is very "bleeding edge". It runs fine "out of the box" on my XP 32-bit and Vista 32-bit machine, but there are a couple of known incompatibilities which may force you to get a "setupterm() failed" error message. Any help with this issue by someone who knows better about PuTTy's terminal management is highly appreciated!
